ARID - Accelerating Reprocessing Infrastructure Development

Welsh European Funding OfficeLaunched in October 2011, ARID was funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. Its aim was to increase the development of reprocessing and collections infrastructure in Wales’ Convergence Area (North West Wales, West Wales and the South Wales Valleys)

By October 2014, ARID had helped businesses:

  • Create 178 new jobs
  • Reduce, reuse or recycle 399,000 tonnes of waste 
  • Avoid 79.5 KT carbon emissions 

(All figures are forecast results over a three to five year period, for businesses supported by October 2014 only)

It also helped them:

  • Rethink the ways they work
  • Improve business management
  • Access additional funding
  • Increase in confidence
  • Access new materials
  • Meet new business contacts

Scott Waste Management

Thanks to ARID funding this recycling collections business bought three new vehicles, a forklift truck and a mill-sized baler. Consequently revenue is up 100 per cent, it employs five more staff, and its clients include John Lewis and B&Q.

What could have taken two to three years to achieve using our own cash flow could be achieved in just one year. WRAP Cymru has acted as a positive catalyst for growth, and this year we are growing at a far quicker rate, making the goal of our own transfer station a real possibility this year. – William Scott, Owner and Director

Williams a Williams Cyf

ARID funding contributed to a source-segregated ‘bring’ site and collections for tourism businesses, which helped Williams a Williams Cyf cut costs and increase revenue, and gave North Wales’ tourism sector access to high quality recycling collections.
