Electrical Product Design Review: Televisions

Overview

The case studies below describe how simple design changes and better customer information can achieve a net-positive result for businesses bottom-line.

Own-brand LCD television

This case study describes a product design review of a 32 inch own-brand LCD TV for a major retailer. Various cost saving opportunities were identified and annual savings, on 100,000 sales per year, were estimated to be:

~ £145,000 to £215,000

~ 470 to 775 tonnes of CO₂e

Improvements Identified

During the teardown the following key areas were identified that would benefit from design and/or manufacturing changes:

1.	Modify injection moulding of the stand and case parts and improve QA procedures to ensure greater durability.
2.	Use more recycled plastic in the back of the case and concealed plastic parts such as the screen bezel.
3.	Strengthen the stand to TV and wall mount arrangements to reduce the risk of failure and product damage.
4.	Improve the design of the speaker mounts to avoid vibration and improve durability.
5.	Simplify the design to reduce use of materials (e.g. metal plates) and fasteners and hence to facilitate assembly and repair.

Own-brand television

This case study describes how simple design changes to an own-brand TV can improve durability and contribute to lifetime extension. Based on 100,000 unit sales per annum, savings were estimated to be:

~ £54,475 per annum

~ 955 tonnes of CO₂e per annum

~ 200 tonnes of material per annum

Improvements Identified

During the teardown the following key areas were identified that would benefit from design and/or manufacturing changes:

1.	Redesign the TV stand to improve the moulding quality and prevent stress cracking occurring.
2.	Reduce the length of the internal cables.
3.	Reduce the size of the decoder board and replace the steel plate underneath with two smaller steel brackets.
4.	Redesign the speaker assemblies with individual connectors to enable them to be replaced one at a time.
5.	Improve the packaging to provide better product protection.
