‘Bioplastics’ can be a confusing word, having different terms, claims, standards, and use/disposal considerations compared to conventional, fossil-based plastics. To ensure that usage is appropriate, this guidance document aims to give businesses the tools to make the right decisions.
This document aims to provide guidance on what considerations should be made when deciding if a bioplastic material is appropriate in an application or whether external factors, such as current manufacturing or waste management limitations, are restrictive in reaping benefits. It is a snapshot of progress in the use and waste management of bio-based/compostable plastics materials and products, clarifying:
· Terminology,
· Relevant certification standards.
· General environmental benefits / drawbacks.
· Key applications and opportunities (dependent on waste management infrastructure).
· Education on the communication of information (including at the consumer disposal stage).
This document aligns with the Welsh Government’s Beyond Recycling Strategy: specifically, the encouragement of more bioplastic use from renewable sources where the use of plastic is still needed, and where this represents the best overall environmental option.
