This Advisory Note is designed to provide advice to waste site designers, waste site operators, Welsh local authority drainage officers and sustainable drainage system (SuDS) approval bodies (SABs) on the application of SuDS requirements in Wales, specifically for waste sites.

This document seeks to provide guidance around practical applications and factors for consideration, and can be utilised both in the context of developing new waste sites and when redeveloping existing sites.

This Advisory Note is non-statutory, non-technical guidance. It reflects law and practice in Wales and is not directly applicable elsewhere in the UK. Its purpose is to illustrate potential solutions for waste sites to comply with their permits and to achieve SuDS compliance. In the event of a conflict between this Advisory Note and statutory documents, priority is to be given to legislation and statutory guidance.

The Advisory Note comprises:

  • an explanation of its background, aims and objectives (section 2.0);
  • the definition of a waste site (section 3.0);
  • waste site-specific SuDS advice for each of the standards (section 4.0);
  • concluding remarks (section 5.0); and
  • a summary of the stakeholder engagement that was conducted to inform the production of this Advisory Note to increase accuracy (section 6.0).
