This report brings together several strands of work (reports, surveys and presentations) completed by partners as part of a Digital Deposit Return Scheme (DDRS) pilot in Conwy, run during June and July 2021.
The Welsh Government is aiming to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) by 2024. A DRS is a system that encourages consumers to recycle an item by charging a monetary deposit at the point of purchase. This deposit is refunded when the item is returned for recycling.
The scheme currently under consideration is for drinks containers and its aim is to reduce littering, boost recycling rates and improve the quality of the material collected for recycling. A DDRS would use technology to enable consumers to redeem the deposit when recycling containers using existing council recycling services.
